Hellblazer 286

The final part of the devil's trenchcoat storyline wraps up a lot of unfinished business. Firstly Constantine confronted Tamsin the with that has been terrorizing his niece Gemma. Constantine wastes no time in burning the book of demons the books used to summon demons. Constantine leaves without much of a fuss from Tamsin. More troubles lies ahead as Constantine still has to negotiate with Terry his father in law on the Italian mob problem and locate his crazy trenchcoat.

Apparently the coat has a mind of its own and going around manipulating people to kill. Constantine managed to locate the coat but not before few people died because of the coat. After nearly getting shot by a mad man donning the coat, Constantine managed to subdued it by some chants. The messed up coat is back to normal and Constantine finally gets to put it on with all the blood and dirt on it. On returning home Constantine has the shock of his life when he saw Terry sleeping with his niece Gemma. Constantine flips out and screams at Terry but there's not much he can do anyway. Gemma asks Constantine to do a favor for her just so that she will stop seeing Terry but the favor comes at a huge price which will be addressed in the next story line.

Hellblazer 283

To John Constantine, to loose his trenchcoat is a big deal. Bad things will happen and all this is the focus of this new story line concentrating on John's trenchcoat. Its amazing how the writer weaves the story as a major part of John's character and infusing it with life like its part of a limb. Gemma, John's niece is still angry at John for allowing his evil body double to rape her in the previous story. Gemma stole the trenchcoat and sold it online to some guy.

The trenchcoat has a consciousness as it narrates through the story, persuading the new owner Muzzie to put it on. The stench on the trenchcoat is unbearable even after going through the laundry. The stench is like a curse and infected the other laundry causing people to grow mad trying to remove the stench including cutting ones nose and setting oneself on fire.

John meanwhile is trying to locate his trenchcoat back as weird things starts happening to him in the absence of his trenchcoat like getting teleported to the river Thames while sleeping and blood oozing from his apartment. Got to see it to believe it. Muzzie meanwhile wearing the trenchcoat develops a whole new personality and confidence with the help of the consciousness of the trenchcoat and got himself a chick at a bar. After a wild night the girl wanted him to dump the coat. The trenchcoat tried to talk Muzzie out of dumping it but Muzzie is too scared of loosing the gorgeous girlfriend. What came as a shock is as Muzzie is taking the trenchcoat to the trash, he was killed after being hit by a motorcycle. What makes you think that this character is going to be a major part of the story suddenly is knocked off so that the trenchcoat journey of cursing another new owner begins.

Hellblazer 281

The vivid cover for this issue speaks a lot as John Constantine have to face off against a demon summoned by his nephew Gemma. John conjures a few spells and in the doing so also gets whack around for trying to trap the demon. Gemma feeling guilty of what she has done ran to get help from John's wife Epiphany. Gemma explained the whole story. Epiphany gets an idea and concocts a substance to help John subdue the demon.

On reaching John, John has managed to trap the demon but not for long as his spell doesn't have much affect. The demon was finally brought down using the substance that Epiphany has causing the demon to choke to death. John has a few funny one liners and some were down right sarcastic. That is the way to go if he's under pressure and in danger. But in the end the relationship between John and his nephew is irreparable no matter how John makes up for it. Overall a lot of action in this issue pitting John with the help of his wife against the bird like demon.

Hellblazer 280

John's nephew Gemma planned to set him up by summoning a demon monster to kill him off. This issue reflects to the motive for  Gemma doing this as she narrates her story and motive throughout the issue. In the past issue John's body was possesed by an impostor an violated Gemma. John was not aware of what his impostor body has done and so do Gemma who didn't know this also and determined to seek retribution.

Since then she was not her own self as she waits for John's arrival towards a trap. The creature summoned is not stupid as it seems and tried to get ways to its own advantage throughout the issue. After John's arrival the bird like creature ambushed John and proved too strong for John's counter magic. John was injured and at his wits end as the story ends with Gemma walking out on him leaving him to deal with the creature.

The issue is penciled by guess artist Gael Bertrand and the characters rendering are different from issues by previous artist. The style reminds me of Eduardo Risso's penciling in 100 Bullets.

Hellblazer 279

The story still revolves on John's thumb that he got from another guy, Tom as John seeks out who is the owner. John got to know the thumb's owner from his widow and at the time he was running scared from a local gangster who is also John's father in law, Terry Greaves. John soon learn that Greaves was paid to scare of Tom. At the same time Greaves revealed that he is involved with mafia that is responsible for antique treasure smuggling and he wants John's help in dealing with them in exchange for the information on Tom. John and Greaves had a deal.

Soon John shows up at the doorstep of the people that paid Greaves. There was a scuffle when Greaves also arrives at the scene and accidentally John found his original thumb to be used as sculpture. John feeling grateful on finding his thumb, replaced his new thumb with his own. That process involves dismembering his new thumb again and reattaching his old thumb, with a lot of yelling and swearing.

Meanwhile Gemma whose uncle is John, try to get revenge on her uncle. She gets the help of some witch to summon a demon to get after John. As the demon appears, she had the fright of her life. She begins to have second thoughts and a change of heart. It seems that the demon is much too frightening and powerful to control She pleaded to her uncle John over the phone to come and save her. What kind of spell will John use to outwit this demon.

Hellblazer 277

John Constantine just got married in the previous issues. John has been missing a thumb and this new story arc deals with the diificulty that he has with his missing thumb. Story centering around missing thumb is kind of refreshing to say the least. His wife Epiphany find that she can't live with John's missing thumb and so off John go to the doctors to find a new one. Finding a thumb is not easy as it looks.

John conjures up a spell of some sort to come up with the ideal way to get a new thumb, by predicting a fatal accident which is where he's gonna find one. The spell is energy sapping but he does make it to the location of the accident.

As he was preparing to cut off one of the accident victim's thumb, a monster came to reclaim the victim's body as he has made a pact with the monster. But John would not have any of it and in the end he does get his thumb.

But things are going to get interesting as John has other problem as well which is not of his doing but of his other evil twin from the previous issue. The deed is done and a bunch of witch is summoning a monster that is gonna kill John in the next issue. Lets see there's any more tricks up his sleeve to deal with this. Peter Milligan sure has this series going on a interesting path with John's marriage and this missing thumb story arc.
